Digital Literacy

It is interesting to learn that Kompas newsapers 8 Februari 2022 published  an article entitled "The Elders Need Digital Literacy."  It is found out that in our society the elders is the most vulnerable community who are easily get affected by hoax because some of them have limited knowledge and skills in dealing with digital technology. These lacks have caused them trouble because they are often manipulated by those who have bad intention to take advantage.

I am a member of less than 30 WA groups and one of which is the group of my neighbors who live in one RT (Rukun Tetangga: the smallest part of teritory). This group tends to be passive, only the coordinator who regularly  share some information about the date for monthly gathering.

The WA group of "Dasa Wisma Pepaya" (the name of the community) has been more active because one of my neighbor always shares any kind of  information related to covid-19 pandemic.  However,  it is usually one side information, meaning that there will be no respond except once in a while someone send stickers expressing thanks or write "matur nuwun" (thank you).

It is written in another part of the article that related to the information on health, the elders, actually, have the biggest concern to protect themselves and their closest neighborhod. If they receive issues which  considered as threat, they will easily get emotional so they can not think clearly and tend to send the information as soon as possible.

The latest news I checked today from the WA group,  my neighbor sent the informatian that my district is still on the top of covid-19 patients numbers among other district in the Special Province of Yogyakarta.

Though I feel down to read the news, I believe my neighbor has a good intention in sharing the information. She wants all of us, her neighbor to be aware, keep the health protocol to be able to pass the pandemic safely.

What is the good part of the article? It is explained that the digital literacy program will reach 25 cities and town all around Indonesia. There will be 6,000 elders involved in this activities who will then serve as the agents of change.
