Valentine Day

Thanks to Facebook with its memory. I read again my short notes 8 years ago when Kelud Mountain erupted and sent ashes high upward that also darkened Yogya. We almost could see nothing while rain of ashes kept pouring covered everything.  It took weeks to dust off the ashes and I felt so tired. It was my grey Valentine Day. dan abu menghambur menggebu meninggalkanku termangu

Where are You Going?

When you ask the people of Yogyakarta the question 'Where are you going?" The most probably  answer will be one N among these four Ns, namely: ngalor (to the North), ngetan (to the East), ngidul (to the South),   ngulon (to the West).  Those 4 Ns actually the dialect of saying the cardinal points:  North ( Lor) , East ( Wetan ), South ( Kidul ), and West ( Kulon ).  I have spent a half part of my life in Yogyakarta to study at first and make a living later on.  While studying, it was  not really necessary to use the cardinal points for my daily trips because public transportation were  available to deliver us to every corner of the city and it was cheap. I could just sit and surrender my life to the drivers and the conductors of the buses or station wagons who would bring their passengers to the chosen destination. I must learn to get accustomed to the cardinals points when I became the coordinator of video shooting especially when we went to ...

Digital Literacy

It is interesting to learn that Kompas newsapers 8 Februari 2022 published  an article entitled "The Elders Need Digital Literacy."  It is found out that in our society the elders is the most vulnerable community who are easily get affected by hoax because some of them have limited knowledge and skills in dealing with digital technology. These lacks have caused them trouble because they are often manipulated by those who have bad intention to take advantage. I am a member of less than 30 WA groups and one of which is the group of my neighbors who live in one RT (Rukun Tetangga: the smallest part of teritory). This group tends to be passive, only the coordinator who regularly  share some information about the date for monthly gathering.  The WA group of "Dasa Wisma Pepaya" (the name of the community) has been more active because one of my neighbor always shares any kind of  information related to covid-19 pandemic.  However,  it is usually one side info...

Never Too Old to Learn

Last week I went to the biggest private national bank in my hometown. I wanted to sent money for the payment of a piece of written saroong  batik (Indonesian/Javanese traditional fabric) and fee for writing article for my friend. Actually, it could be done with  internet banking, but I wanted to save 13,500 rupiah (this is 2 times of fees for inter-banks fund transfer). Another reason was I liked to spend my time observing people in different places when I have free time. I didn't need to queue since I came late in the afternoon near the closing time of the bank so I could finish my money transfer  in 10 minutes. Next to me there was an middle-age woman who looked confused while looking at her cell phone and at the same time answering the question from the  teller in front of her. I overheard the conversation and I knew that the woman could not fill in the form for fund transfer which should be done by using an android based application. The teller tried hard to exp...

Stay Safe

It is not over. The pandemic is still there. Until today, I have received 5 WA text asking about our shelter for accommodating those who have to be in isolation because of covid-19 or omnicron viruses.  So far, there is no plan to reopen the shelter and I have to give a no answer to them. To be honest, it is not easy to give a no answer. I do hope that there will be no more similar questions in the following days. Stay safe every one. The best easiest thing we can do today is to obey the health protocol.

Seize the Day

This afternoon I watched "Gourmet Goes Tribal" from National Geographic channel. It was a 2019 production actually, but I love to watch it. Believing that food can change lives, Colombian chief Pablo Naranjo Agular travels to remote India to meet, live, and cook with the tribes of the region. Admist surreal surrounding, Pablo is spellbound by the ingredients, techniques, and people. I love Pablo's reflection on his visit in some parts of Asia. He learnt many new things during the time with the people. While for me, I  learn one thing from this program: just live your life to the fullest every day.

A Beautiful Day

This morning, I went to Salatiga, a city in Central Java province which is located strategically at the crossroad of five direction, namely Semarang, Bringin, Surakarta, Magelang, and Ambarawa. I had an appointment to have an interview with a lady.  I had just contacted her last week, I got her number from my dorm mate.  She answered me that she was willing to have an interview and just answered "tunggu" (wait) when I asked here when and where the interview would be.  I waited for 5 days before texted her again, and the answer was still "tunggu" (wait) still I did not receive information about the schedule and the place for the interview.  Finally, because I had to report about this plan in the meeting last Wednesday, I made a decision to inform her that I  would meet her on Saturday. She directly answered yes, at noon, and she mention a coffee shop to be the place for the interview. I told her that the shooting crew  would depart at 8 o'clock from Yogyakar...
